From the Elkhart Truth:
Close to 10,600 stormwater bills that were miscalculated earlier this year have been corrected.
The Elkhart County Treasurer’s Office has mailed new bills to property owners with accurate stormwater fees. Since 2007, the fees have been collected annually with property taxes to help local governments pay for programs that protect clean water in streams, rivers and lakes.
Eric Kurtz, the county’s stormwater coordinator, told the Elkhart County Board of Commissioners in May that non-residential parcels were overcharged by consultant Government Utilities Technology Services. The consultant, he said, used the county’s stormwater rate from two years ago to calculate the bills, charging $15 for every 2,800 square feet of hard surface. The county’s current stormwater rate is lower — $15 for every 3,600 square feet of hard surface, which includes rooftops, driveways and parking lots. Homeowners are charged a flat fee of $15 for residential parcels. About 55,000 stormwater bills were not impacted by the error.
The corrected bills, Kurtz said, replace the bills that was sent earlier this year. Kurtz said property owners who have already paid their bill should call the treasurer’s office at 535-6759 with any questions. Anyone who overpaid their bill will receive a letter with instructions on how to receive a refund, he said.
