Repeal of Tax Abatement Ordinance Tabled in South Bend

From the South Bend Tribune:

Citing renewed interest in a comprehensive, countywide tax abatement ordinance, County Council member Dale DeVon on Tuesday requested that a proposal to repeal the county's current abatement ordinance be tabled for 30 days.

The council approved the action by a vote of 6-3, with Mike Kruk, Cory Noland and Mark Catanzarite opposed.

"I got calls from some (South Bend Common Council) members ... and I guess the (Chamber of Commerce of St. Joseph County) had discussions with (South Bend and Mishawaka), looking at trying to create some sort of document that works for all three governments," DeVon, R-District C, said Tuesday.

Passed in 2009, the county's current tax abatement ordinance provides for a base abatement period of three years, with additional years awarded based on a company's willingness to meet certain wage requirements.

Five businesses have been granted abatements since the ordinance took effect, according to Tribune records.

DeVon, who along with other Republicans thinks the ordinance is too restrictive, did not rule out acting on the repeal at later date, stating, "I'd like to see how it plays out over the next 30 days."
