Medical Devices Tax "No Longer Hidden"

In a new campaign advertisement, Republican congressional candidate Jackie Walorski talks about "a hidden tax on medical devices" in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The 2.3 percent excise tax might have been somewhat obscure when Congress approved the health care bill and President Barack Obama signed it into law in 2010, but it's definitely out of hiding now.
Both Democrats and Republicans in Indiana have criticized the medical-device tax while on the campaign trail this year. The industry is an area of pride for the state's economy -- employing more than 20,000 people -- and the tax aimed at those companies is scheduled to take effect Jan. 1.
Brendan Mullen, a Democrat running against Walorski in Indiana's 2nd District, has promised to work on repealing the medical-device tax if he's elected. The tax has been an issue in the state's U.S. Senate race between Democrat Joe Donnelly and RepublicanRichard Mourdock as well.
The main difference between the two parties' approaches is that Republicans want to repeal the health care law altogether. Democrats, including Mullen and Donnelly, don't want to repeal the entire law, but they do want to remove certain provisions.
