The Monroe County Council approved, in a single resolution, both the appropriations and tax rates and levies for 2013. In past years, they had to be approved in two separate resolutions.
Back on Oct. 10, the council approved expenditures from its general fund totaling $29,603,950, while projected revenues are $29,328,158 — a difference of more than $275,792.
But by the end of next year, that total in the red may go into the black because of reversions, or expenditures that were appropriated for but not actually spent.
The council voted 5-1 in favor of passing the budget resolution. Republican council member Marty Hawk was the single vote of opposition for the county’s 2013 budget. And member Vic Kelson was not present for Tuesday evening’s meeting.

After passing the county’s appropriations and tax rates and levies, the council unanimously approved salary ordinances — concerning a paralegal in the public defender’s office and two legal positions in the pretrial diversion program — in a separate resolution. If errors are discovered in salary ordinances, they can be fixed or changed until the end of the year.
As part of the county’s 2013 budget, county employees will see a $1,000 cost of living raise.
