Residents looking to buy a fixer-upper home could find one for a few thousand dollars through the county tax sale, as long as they’re willing to wait a year before owning it.
More than 400 properties are slated for sale in October. If the owners don’t pay their overdue tax bills, a home or vacant lot could be yours for as little as $500.
The county is trying to collect more than $2 million in unpaid taxes during the tax sale this fall.
Properties that haven’t had taxes paid for three installments in a row, or 18 months, are set for tax sale. During the sale, the county auctions off properties to people willing to pay the total of overdue taxes, late fees and other liens such as overdue stormwater fees or high grass fines.
