NWI Reports Tax Sale Looms for Deliquent Property Owners in Lake County

From the Northwest Indiana Times:

About 9,000 delinquent Lake County taxpayers have nine weeks to mend their ways or face losing their property.

Treasurer John Petalas said his office will hold its annual tax sale between Sept. 13 and Sept. 24.
He said property owners who have failed to pay at least three tax installments will be turned over to his auctioneer, Indianapolis-based SRI, for sale to the highest bidder.

It will be the second year for the sale to be conducted online, replacing past sales during which several hundred bidders had to be present in the Lake County Government Complex auditorium for hours as the auctioneers went through properties one by one, many of them, long abandoned and unwanted buildings.

The online auction is designed to let a wider audience spend more time bidding on properties of wider interest by logging on to the SRI website at www.sri-onlineauctions.com

Petalas said bidders will be able to access the sale on personal or public computers that will be set up at the Lake County Government Center throughout the course of its 12 days.

Last year, the online approach led to 900 parcels being sold and hundreds of owners paying their taxes to avoid losing their properties for a total of more than $17 million that went into public coffers.
