Seymour Begins Budget Process

From the Seymour Tribune:

If all goes as planned, Seymour employees could receive a 2 percent wage increase next year.
Salaries, along with higher health insurance and fuel costs, are issues the finance committee is studying as it shapes the city’s 2013 budget.

Committee members will meet at 4:30 p.m. today at City Hall to hammer out details before presenting the budget to the common council later this fall. Today’s meeting is open to the public.

“It’s coming together OK,” Mayor Craig Luedeman said of the city’s 2013 finances. “There’s not a lot of increase, but we are looking at a 2 percent raise for our employees.”

Luedeman said it’s been two years since workers have received an increase.

“Council has wanted to look at it but just hasn’t been able to,” he said. “I think it has a good chance of passing.”

Clerk-treasurer Fred Lewis said the 2013 general fund could go up by 3.1 percent, bringing it to $11,435,162. This year’s general fund was set at $11,093,946.

That increase includes higher salaries as well as more money for insurance, he said.

Beyond that, Lewis said the city isn’t far enough along in the budgeting process to speculate.
