Madison County Approves $40.6 Million Budget

After three hours of debate Monday night, the Madison County Council passed a $40.6 million budget for fiscal 2013 that includes money for additional sheriff deputies and road paving and maintenance.

Included in that total is a county general fund budget of $23.4 million; using $5.6 million in county option income tax (COIT) revenue dedicated for public safety expenses to pay for Madison County Sheriff’s Department salary and operational expenses; and $2.5 million in “regular” COIT tax revenue to pave county roads; and approximately $9 million in other funds to pay for certain expenses.

Although final property tax revenue figures are not yet available, according to the county auditor’s office, as of Monday evening the county property tax levy will raise about $21.8 million, with a property tax rate of about 73 cents per $100 of assessed valuation.
