Monroe County Passes "Nearly" Balanced Budget

From the Bloomington Herald-Times:

The Monroe County Council passed a budget for 2013 that council members unanimously praised, even though Republican council member Marty Hawk voted against it.

All county employees will get a $1,000 cost of living raise, and the county sheriff will get one more deputy.

The council approved expenditures from its general fund totaling $29,603,950, while projected revenues are $29,328,158. That’s a difference of $275,792, but by the end of 2013, that red number is likely to turn black or close to it because of reversions — expenditures that were appropriated for 2012 but not spent during the year.

“We sure would like to see zeroes, but $275,000 is pretty darned close to operating in the black, especially if you consider likely reversions,” said council member Ryan Langley, a Republican.

“It’s a deficit on paper, but what it says on paper doesn’t reflect reality,” he said.

“With anticipated reversions, it isn’t a budget deficit at all,” said Democrat Rick Dietz.
