From the Northwest Indiana Times:
The various conservancy districts around Porter County may soon face the challenge of having to collect their own taxes from users.
Porter County Commissioner President John Evans, R-North, said Tuesday he would like to see the district taxes taken off the county bills because they are being confused as part of the taxes collected for the county and other local taxing units.
"It has nothing to do with the county," he said.
The county receives no compensation for collecting and distributing the taxes for the districts, which provide various combinations of water, sewage, drainage and erosion services, Evans said.
Porter County Auditor Bob Wichlinski agreed with the proposed change, saying county employees are left to deal with the concerns that arise from handling the district taxes.
The conservancy district taxes, along with money collected for ditch work and the Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County, are spelled out on the bottom left corner of tax bills.
Evans said the recycling and waste reduction district has contributed in the past to the county's tax collection efforts.

Porter County had eight active conservancy districts as of last year, the most of any county in the state, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
