Wayne County Commissioners' Sale Brings in $169,200

From the Richmond Palladium-Item:

More than 120 people, including 102 registered bidders, bought up 55 of the 57 properties available in this morning’s Wayne County Commissioners Sale in the County Administration Building.

The sale brought in $169,200, which will be deposited into the county’s general fund. It also puts tax delinquent properties back on county tax rolls, said commissioner Doug Williamson.

Joe Edwards of SRI Inc. of Indianapolis handled the auction and within 75 minutes all but two properties were sold.

The property that brought the highest amount was the former Economy Tile Company, which includes two tracts of land, several buildings and about 13.5 acres. Steve Shank, a farmer from the Economy area, bought the properties for $38,000 and said he hasn’t decided what to do with it.

“I might fence it off and put some cattle on it or I might clean it up for investment,” he said.

Melvin Andrews of Bargersville, south of Greenwood, bought the former Bradford Place, the former elegant apartment building at 12th and East Main streets in Richmond for $2,400.

Andrews said he plans to “rehab the building” for reuse.

“It will be apartments,” he said. “It’s in a good neighborhood and is on a bus line. I think it would be good for students or for older people.”
