Kenley Pushes for Federal Online Sales Tax

From Indiana Public Media:

State Senate Appropriations chair Luke Kenley says he wants the focus on changing online sales tax laws to be at the federal level – and not the state level — moving forward.

Kenley has been the state’s leader on pushing for greater collection of online sales taxes and serves on a national board calling for uniform sales tax collection.

He has previously lobbied for state efforts to collect the taxes but now, he says, the sole focus must be on federal legislation.

“The Supreme Court has said that Congress has the authority to authorize the states to collect that and only Congress can do that so that’s why we’re working there,” Kenley says.

And Kenley says he has hope Congress will act on the issue soon.

“And I think we have a chance maybe in 2013 to get a bill passed,” Kenley says.  “We almost got it put into an amendment into a bill this year, just this month.”

Kenley says estimates show the state could bring in as much as $400 million in revenue collecting sales tax from online retailers.
