Vincennes Considers Spring Referendum for New Pool

From the Vincennes Sun-Commercial:

While the immediate question facing the city council is whether to spend almost $27,000 to repair a portion of the liner at Rainbow Beach, the question that will be posed to city voters next spring will be whether they will support paying for a whole new municipal pool.

And while we expect council members to say no to repairing the liner, we do anticipate voters will decide to say yes to building a new pool — if, that is, the cost of it is within reason, well below that $4 million figure that’s been discussed.
...

Once the parks board decided to seek a separate tax levy (with the requirement of a referendum) to pay for the new pool, we expected private fundraising efforts to sink like a stone.

Why worry about raising $1 million or more when property owners could pay for the whole thing?

The problem is that the parks board is looking at raising about $2.5 million or so through the referendum, an amount the department can manage financially and enough money to build a perfectly suitable pool that meets the most-pressing needs of those in the community who are most likely to use the pool on a regular basis and not just a couple of times a year.

Those in the community who want something bigger, a pool with 50-meter lanes, have had a year in which to raise at least a portion of the additional $1 million or so needed to pay for such largess.

And they haven’t.

There’s still time, four or five months for them to come up with the extra money.

But they needed to get started.
