Winfield Loses Revenue Due to Lack of Own ZIP Code

From the Northwest Indiana Times:

Since its incorporation in 1993, the town hasn’t had its own ZIP code, and that has caused problems for residents and town government.
Winfield is in Winfield Township, but shares its ZIP code with Crown Point.
Ten years ago, Winfield Chamber of Commerce officials requested a separate ZIP code from the United States Postal Service, but that request was denied.
“The ZIP code bugaboo with the town has been going on forever,” said Clerk-Treasurer Richard Anderson Jr., who has launched a new effort to get the postal service to grant Winfield its own unique ZIP code.
He reported on the latest effort at a recent Town Council meeting.
Anderson said he has made a formal request with the postmaster and has also contacted the office of U.S. Rep. Peter Visclosky, D-Merrillville,for assistance.
Winfield is due financial revenue from excise taxes, he said.
In addition, any work in town requires the contractor to submit a performance bond. There is confusion about whether the bond is payable to Winfield or Crown Point, because property records list Crown Point as the address, Anderson said.

“It is in the best interests of the town to obtain a unique ZIP code,” the clerk treasurer said. “We want to make sure the town receives the revenue it deserves.”
