Times Reports Hobart Council to Revisit Abatement Request for Medical Office

From the Northwest Indiana Times:

The City Council is postponing until its Sept. 4 meeting a tax abatement request for a $3 million medical/office center off 61st Avenue.

The abatement request, which the City Council conditionally approved at its June 19 meeting, was tabled at the July 17 and Aug. 7 meetings.

Earlier this month the council postponed action at the request of Brent C. Embrey, a Fishers-based attorney representing the petitioner for the medical/office center.

The 10-year tax abatement request that Embrey's client is seeking narrowly missed being tabled at the June 19 meeting after several council members said they wanted appropriate traffic requirements in place.

At the July 17 meeting, City Attorney Anthony DeBonis said conditional action taken by the council at that meeting would not hold up legally. The council agreed at that time to table and take a second look at the request.

Some of the proposed changes the council might add to the new tax abatement agreement include payment of a 15 percent abatement fee and the purchase by developers of adjacent land on 62nd Street within two years.

The City Council earlier this spring unanimously decided to designate property at 6188 Marcella Blvd. as an economic revitalization area for the new medical/office center.

The second step in the process, a public hearing, was held June 19 for the 28,000-square-foot building, which will be called Hobart Square.
