The city's proposed 2014 budget is roughly the same as the one proposed last year, Clerk-Treasurer Deborah Longer said.
Next year's proposed general budget is $18,098,704 compared to this year's $18,244,505 advertised budget.
Longer is anticipating the 2014 proposed general budget will be cut anywhere from $1.2 to $1.7 million with an approved budget to be in the $16 million range.
"The certified budget we will receive will be less than the advertised budget; it's always less," Longer said.
A public hearing for the proposed budget is set for 6 p.m. Sept. 18 with a full vote Oct. 16. Both meetings are held at City Hall, 414 Main St.
The city's proposed 2014 tax rate also is advertised higher, at $2.93 per $100 of assessed value, with the reality it will end up being about half.
The current property tax rate is $1.14 per $100, which is close to what it will be next year, Longer said.
The good news for this coming year is that the tax levy has been unfrozen which means Hobart will receive an additional $350,000, Longer said.

The City Council earlier this month gave tentative approval for 2 percent raises for city officials and city employees.
A final vote on the salary ordinance still must be taken.
