Clark County Auditor R. Monty Snelling said the error by the state will result in more than $4 million coming back to Clark County.
“It’s very good news,” he said.
The state owes the county funding from County Economic Development Income Tax and County Adjusted Gross Income Tax distributions in 2011 and for the first three months of 2012, totaling $4,134,893.
Floyd County will receive $2,739,253 due to the state’s error. Floyd County Council President Ted Heavrin was pleasantly surprised by the announcement. Floyd County has been bracing for a third David Camm murder trial which officials said will cost about $1 million.
“I think it’s great,” said Steve Bush, president of the Floyd County Commissioners. “It will give us some money for bridges and roads, and will give us some extra money to do some things.”
Floyd County Auditor Darin Coddington said he was not able to comment on the matter until he receives a directive from the state as to how to distribute the funds to the different municipalities. He said no money had been received yet.
Clark County Councilman Brian Lenfert said the auditor’s office has already received notice of the electronic funds transfer made to the county.
“It helps balance the budget for this year and maybe next,” he said. “That’s the thing, it’s a one-time influx of money. It helps the county’s budget situation on a short-term basis.”
Snelling said he expects Clark County government will receive about $1 million or more as a result of the error.
He explained that all of the municipalities within the county will receive some funds, but an exact amount will not be known until the county gets its percentages for distributions.
