Hobart City Council Approves Two Year Tax Break for Renovating Vacant Car Dealership Building

The City Council on Wednesday gave an initial OK for a two-year tax break to a local business planning to renovate and expand into a vacated car dealership.

Hobart could be the first city in the county to offer the new tax break — available for eligible vacant buildings in designated economic revitalization areas — if the City Council approves the measure at a May 2 public hearing, said Denarie Kane, the city's economic development director.

So far no other cities or towns have offered the tax incentive, Kane said.

Plans by Midwest Service Center, 408 S. Shelby St., are to purchase and renovate the former Isakson Motor Sales.

The longtime car dealership, 3530 N. Hobart Road, closed two years ago when Chrysler Group LLC terminated agreements with more than 700 dealers nationwide.
