Lake County Commissioners are giving the county tourism bureau the power to pursue delinquent hotel and motel taxes.
The Board of Commissioners signed an interlocal agreement Wednesday with Speros Batistatos, president and CEO of the South Shore Convention & Visitors Authority, to give him power to assist the county treasurer in enforcing the 5 percent assessment against hotel and motel guests that has been in place for more than two decades.
Batistatos, who began asking for authority earlier this year, got approval from the county treasurer, county auditor and Indiana attorney general.
Typically, the treasurer collects all local taxes, but County Treasurer John Petalas has said his office is too busy with property taxes to give the hotel-motel tax the kind of attention Batistatos is planning.
