Trib-Star Reports Terre Haute Gets First Look at 2014 Budget

From the Terre Haute Tribune-Star:

The Terre Haute City Council got a look Thursday at a rough draft of the city’s 2014 general fund budget.

Leslie Ellis, city controller, discussed a preliminary draft of the 2014 general fund budget with the nine-member council at Thursday’s regular meeting of the city’s legislative body. At this point, it calls for spending about $33 million; however, that could change, Ellis said.

The general fund covers most of the city’s day-to-day expenses, such as salaries.

“This is our starting point,” Ellis told the council. “We’re still working on it. It’s a work in progress.”

Exact revenue figures for the 2014 budget are not yet available, Ellis noted. It is not yet known how much property tax revenue the city can expect next year, for example, she noted.

“I don’t know what the [tax] assessment will be,” Ellis said.

The council is expected to have its first hearing on the budget in late September.
